Information for Candidates

Potential candidates for Mayor and Council must meet the following criteria:

  • a Canadian citizen
  • 18 years old or older on election day
  • Must be Manitoba resident
  • A qualified voter of Hamiota Municipality
  • Not disqualified by law

To become a qualified candidate, a person must do the following steps:

  1. Submit a registration form.
  2. Perform the nomination process

Registration Process

Candidates for mayor or council MUST register with the Senior Election Official before soliciting donations or incurring any campaign expenditures.

  • Obtain the Candidate package from the SEO. The Candidate package contains all documents required for the election.
  • Fill out the registration form and all applicable consent forms.
  • Potential candidate must return all forms to the SEO in-person. The SEO will then authorize the candidate and provide instructions for the nomination process, allowing the candidate to commence an election campaign.
  • Form required for registration: Form 11A

Registration for candidates for Mayor begins on Friday, May 1, 2026 and ends at 4:30PM., Tuesday, September 22, 2026

Registration for candidates for Council members begins on June 30, 2026 and ends at 4:30PM, Tuesday September 22, 2026


Nomination Process

All nominations must be supported by a number of eligible voters whose names appear on the voter’s list. 

  • by at least 25 voters of the municipality or not less than 1% of the voter’s of the local authority.
  • For Hamiota Municipality, SEO requires 15 to 20 signatures. 
  • It is better for the candidate to have more than the required signatures in case it turns out that the person is not eligible to sign in support of the nomination, or the person is not on the voter’s list. 
  • Forms required for nomination: Form 13, and Form 14

Nomination Period begins on September 16, 2026 at 8:30AM and ends on September 22, 2026 at 4:30PM
