Dr. Karen Juce

The Assiniboine RHA would like to congratulate Dr. Karen Juce from Hamiota on receiving the Award of Excellence from the Manitoba College of Family Physicians. The physician chosen for this award exemplifies the qualities of an excellent family physician within his/her practice and within their community. “Dr. Juce is an excellent and caring family physician,” said her colleague Dr. Allan Ranson. “She is also an integral member of the greater community outside the health care field.” Dr. Juce is also a lecturer with the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine and she is involved in teaching at the student and residency level. Dr. Juce has practiced in Hamiota since 1996 and is the mother of three.

Dr. Allan Ranson

Dr. Allan Ranson of Hamiota, Manitoba, is the recipient of the College’s Family Physician of the Year Award for 2007.

Dr. Ranson graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1976 and became certified in Family Medicine in 1978.  He practiced in his home town of Carberry until 1985, worked as an emergency room physician in Brandon from 1985-86 and then moved to Hamiota where he continues to practice.

During almost thirty years as a full service rural family physician, Dr. Ranson has also served the wider community in other ways.  He and his accordion are well known, regularly delighting audiences at the personal care home, his church and in other settings!  He has been actively involved in many facets of health care ranging from advisory roles with various health professional groups and organizations, to volunteer work with several recreational and healthy living advocacy groups as well as in his church.  Between 2003 & 2005 he provided locum services in under serviced rural and remote communities in three provinces.

Dr. Ranson has served in many roles provincially, particularly with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba. In 1990 he was granted Fellowship in the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Dr. Ranson excels as a family man.  He has been supported in all his activities by his wife, Yolande, and their three children (all married), Tamara, Matthew and Monique.  He identifies his three young grandchildren as number one on his list of achievements.

Dr. Ranson was honoured at the President’s Banquet which took place during the College’s Annual Scientific Assembly in Gimli on Saturday, May 5, 2007.

Dr. John Edward Hudson, C.M., M.D.

(1917 – 2003)

University of Manitoba, M.D. 1941

An old fashioned family doctor, “Dr Ed”, as he was affectionately known was the driving force behind the establishment of the Hamiota Health Centre. This centre has become the model for the practice of rural health care delivery in the province of Manitoba. Throughout his career Dr. “Ed” served as a mentor of many physicians in the province.  In 2001 he was made a Member of the Order of Canada for his outstanding dedication to this community and his profession.  That same year he also received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Anniversary Medal.
