To become a municipal registered voter, you must be:
- a Canadian citizen
- at least 18 years old of age on or before election day
- resided in the municipality for six (6) months prior to election day OR a registered owner of land in the municipality
- not disqualified by law from voting
What determines voter residency
- resident of a place where they have their ordinary residence, to which they return when away from it
- resident of only one place at a time and does not change their residency
- person who leaves for temporary reasons such as attending university or work, but to which intends to return when the term or work contract ends.
Registered Land Owner/ Non-resident Land Owner
- Registered land owner is qualified to vote if their name is entered on the assessment roll as the owner, right or interest estate of the land. This includes a person who is an owner with another person as joint tenants, or a person registered as the owner under the Condominium Act.
- Only two (2) non-resident landowners are allowed to vote in a municipal election per property, and must owned the land for at least six (6) months on election day.
How to apply to become a voter
- Obtain an application form from the SEO.
- Fill-out the form and submit it with required valid identification. The SEO will verify the ID presented.
- Non-resident landowner: Each voter must obtain written consent from a majority of the registered landowners, and file this with the senior election official. Consent forms can be obtained from the Senior Election Official (SEO), and must be presented before or at the time of voting.
- A resident may also request to have their name obscured from the voter’s list in order to protect personal security. Application for personal security form is available at the SEO office.
Voting Via Sealed Envelope
If you are a qualified voter but unable to go in-person to a voting station on the advance voting or election day, you may obtain an application form from the SEO on or before July 30, 2026.
